EOI – Volunteer Community Peer Navigator (Bribie Island)

Planning for Wellbeing: Empowering older people and their carers

  • Do you have a good knowledge of local services and supports to help you stay well and connected?
  • Do you enjoy using digital technologies to access this information?
  • Why not volunteer for an exciting new community peer navigator pilot program?

About the pilot program

Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland and Moreton Bay Regional Council are working in partnership to deliver a volunteer community peer navigator pilot program at the Bribie Island Library from April to June 2021.

The aim of the pilot program is to empower older people and their carers to access relevant services and supports and gain confidence in using digital technologies to maintain their wellbeing and adapt to changing circumstances.

About the Peer Navigator Role

We are seeking to appoint an additional peer navigator aged 50 and over, who lives in the local Bribie Island community or surrounding area and is experienced in safely and confidently using the internet and digital technologies to access health information and other relevant resources to stay well and connected. As a Peer Navigator, you will be skilled at handling difficult conversations to maintain healthy boundaries. Through your own lived experience, you are empathetic and can relate to the difficulties a person may be experiencing in terms of knowing where to get help and support and in navigating through the complex healthcare system. You are willing to expand your knowledge of social, cultural, community and other services and supports and empower older people and their carers to use digital technologies to maintain their wellbeing and adapt to changing circumstances.

Commitment required

Volunteer Community Peer Navigators will be required to deliver one half day session per week (Tuesday afternoons, 2pm and 6pm) at the Bribie Island Library from May to June 2021. Peer Navigators will also participate in the evaluation processes, including completion of paper or electronic surveys and end of project interviews and/or focus groups. This project currently runs to 30 June 2021.

Benefits of volunteering in the program

  • Learn to play a greater role in your own mental and social wellbeing.
  • Feel more connected to your local community.
  • Develop greater confidence using web and app-based systems to access services and supports.
  • Enhance your own resilience and adaptability in the face of changing circumstances.

Remuneration and support

Volunteers will be remunerated for travel at the rate of 0.68c per kilometer and for reasonable associated costs.
